Public performance was not an original intention for the choir, but demand has taken them to a number of venues. They have appeared on the Vinyl Café's Christmas show in Kingston, for Stephen Lewis during his speaking tour, for Tom Jackson's food bank tour, the Kingston Blues Festival, and in December 2008 they opened for the world famous "Nylons". They take their practices to area senior's facilities throughout the year. This is in addition to their annual performances in June. The choir's repertoire is constantly growing and includes "Your Love is Lifting Me Higher and Higher", "Come Away With Me", "Way Over Yonder", "I've Got the Music in Me", a Staple Singers medley of tunes and more. The Canadian content in their repertoire is constantly growing including tunes by Gordon Lightfoot, Jann Arden, The McGarrigle Sisters and Hart-Rouge. This
is no ordinary choir - this is a celebration of life in song. Unlike many
choirs, members are not required to read music or audition. Georgette
provides recordings of the various musical parts and the women learn their
parts and sing straight from the heart. For many of the members this has
given them their first opportunity to experience the joy of singing with
a group. In an interview Georgette said, "I can appreciate the beauty
and intricacy of a reading choir and its virtuosity. But I think there
is room for a choir with real people singing from their hearts."
"Shout Sister" and their audiences couldn't agree more. |
